The Evolution of the Loch Ness Monster – Adrian Shine 17th April

The first in our series of talks this year will be ‘The Evolution of the Loch Ness Monster’ delivered by Adrian Shine.

Adrian Shine is the leader of the Loch Ness Project and has been engaged in fieldwork in the Highlands since 1973. He has led over 1000 students and lay volunteers on expeditions; training them to observe, sample and record data. In more recent collaborations, projects have involved workers from some 20 universities and academic institutions within the UK and overseas.

Adrian has taken part in hundreds of TV, video and radio appearances, and also published numerous scientific papers on Loch Ness. This promises to be an excellent opportunity to learn more about his research. For more visit:

Heritage Festival 2023

SHA has agreed to take part in Heritage Festival alongside Glenurquhart Heritage Group.  Funding for the event has been organised through Soirbheas.  The funders requirement is that it is completed before the end of March this year – not an ideal time given how thw weather can be then.  The festival over the weekend of Friday 24th- Monday 27th March will be a pilot event for a possible annual festival.

This year in particular we will be encouraging more local people to take a greater interest in our heritage and history.  Several walks/talks will be on the programme all free of charge!

Further details will be available soon.

New Committee

New committee appointed for 2023:

  • Chairperson: Jim McAuley
  • Secretary: Maeve Ryan
  • Treasurer: Elizabeth McAuley
  • Marjorie Wilson
  • Lilian Gordon
  • Ishbel Strachan
  • Dennis Ross
  • Frank Spencer-Nairn

Many thanks to previous office bearers Lilian and Marjorie for their work over the years and a big welcome to Maeve Ryan who rejoins the committee after a few years.

Interpretation panel for Comar Wood Dun

The long awaited interpretation panel has now been installed at Comar Wood Dun by FLS staff.  It gives some clarity for vistors as to what they are actually looking as parts of the structure are quite overgrown.  We are pressing FLS for the removal of heathers, small conifers and a variety of small shrubs from the interior of the dun and also from the small structures that had been added at a later period.

Committee

Following a very well attended AGM the current committee was re-elected with the addition of Maeve Ryan.  Maeve will replace Marjorie as scretary and a new chairman appointed at the forthcoming committee meeting to be held on Tuesday 8th October.
